Position Summary
The Development Director is responsible for supporting the overall fundraising and development efforts of Miller Home for Girls. This position works closely with the Board of Directors, Executive Director, staff, donors, community partners, volunteers, and other supporters to build relationships and secure the financial and community support necessary to fulfill the mission of Miller Home.
The Development Director will lead efforts related to grants, fundraising, donor management, community engagement, special events, development communications and other support functions as necessary.
Primary Responsibilities
Fundraising & Development
Develop and implement fundraising strategies to support the mission and financial needs of Miller Home.
Identify and pursue opportunities for individual, corporate, foundation, and community support.
Coordinate annual and special fundraising campaigns.
Assist the Board of Directors with fundraising initiatives and provide resources and information to support Board involvement.
Maintain a calendar of fundraising opportunities, campaigns, events, and deadlines.
Grant Development
Research potential grant opportunities that align with Miller Home’s mission and programs.
Prepare and submit grant applications and letters of inquiry.
Maintain a grant calendar and track application and reporting deadlines.
Coordinate with the Miller Home Director and appropriate staff to gather information needed for grant applications and reports.
Maintain records of grant applications, awards, reports, and outcomes.
Donor Management
Develop and maintain positive relationships with current and prospective donors.
Maintain accurate donor records and ensure appropriate acknowledgment and follow-up with donors.
Coordinate thank-you letters, donor communications, acknowledgments, and other stewardship efforts.
Identify opportunities to cultivate and increase donor engagement and support.
Help ensure donors understand the impact of their support on the girls served by Miller Home.
Community Engagement
Represent Miller Home in the community and develop relationships with businesses, churches, civic organizations, foundations, and other community partners.
Identify opportunities for community partnerships, sponsorships, donations, and volunteer involvement.
Communicate the mission, programs, needs, and impact of Miller Home to community members and potential supporters.
Coordinate community outreach efforts and maintain positive relationships with community partners.
Events & Special Projects
Planning, promoting, and coordinating fundraising events and other development-related activities.
Coordinate sponsorship opportunities and donor recognition for special events.
Work with Board members and volunteers to maximize fundraising and community engagement opportunities.
Support other development projects as identified by the Board of Directors.
Communications
Produce development-related newsletters, social media, mailings, appeals, and other communications.
Develop compelling materials that communicate the mission and impact of Miller Home.
Ensure donor and community communications are professional, timely, and consistent with the organization’s mission and values.
Board Relationship
The Development Director reports directly to the Miller Home Board of Directors and is accountable to the Board for development and fundraising responsibilities.
The Development Director will work collaboratively with the Miller Home Director and other staff members to understand organizational needs, program priorities, and opportunities for fundraising and community support. The Miller Home Director does not serve as the Development Director’s supervisor.
Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in nonprofit management, communications, marketing, public relations, business, fundraising, or a related field preferred.
Previous experience in fundraising, grant writing, nonprofit development, donor relations, community engagement, or a related area preferred.
Strong written and verbal communication skills.
Strong organizational and time-management skills.
Ability to develop and maintain professional relationships with donors, businesses, foundations, community organizations, and volunteers.
Ability to work independently while also collaborating effectively with the Board of Directors and Miller Home staff.
Ability to maintain confidentiality and handle donor and organizational information appropriately.
