Supervises: Program Director, Dietitian/Kitchen Supervisor, Maintenance Supervisor, Secretary/Bookkeeper
Collaborates With: Program Director
Position Summary
The Executive Director serves as the chief administrative leader of the Miller Home of Lynchburg, Virginia, with responsibility for overall management, strategic planning, program development, and operational excellence. This role ensures that all services align with the organization’s mission while maintaining full compliance with regulatory and licensing standards.
Qualifications
Education & Experience
A master’s degree from an accredited college or university in human services, social work, education, psychology, counseling, institutional management, child care, or a related field approved by the Board of Directors is required. Candidates must also have a minimum of two (2) years of successful professional experience working with children in a relevant field.

Key Responsibilities
Governance & Board Relations
Attend all Board of Directors and Executive Committee meetings unless otherwise directed
Prepare and submit comprehensive reports covering program operations, staff performance, resident outcomes, and organizational progress
Maintain transparent and consistent communication with the Board
Policy & Compliance
Develop, implement, and regularly update organizational policies in alignment with the Miller Home’s mission
Ensure full compliance with the Virginia Department of Social Services Minimum Standards for Licensed Child Caring Institutions and all applicable laws and regulations
Development & Fundraising
Develop and manage an annual development plan and budget in collaboration with the Board
Maintain knowledge of relevant tax laws and charitable giving strategies
Identify, pursue, and secure grants and funding opportunities
Lead fundraising initiatives, community outreach, and public speaking engagements
Cultivate relationships with donors and stakeholders; oversee donor stewardship and acknowledgment practices
Develop and maintain promotional materials including newsletters, presentations, and brochures
Provide regular updates to the Board on development performance and outcomes
Community Relations & Liaison
Serve as the primary ambassador of the Miller Home to the community, including churches, schools, partners, and vendors
Host visitors and foster strong community relationships
Personnel Management
Oversee all human resource functions including recruitment, hiring, onboarding, supervision, training, and performance evaluations
Provide regular supervision and professional development opportunities for staff
Promote a collaborative, mission-driven team culture
Program Oversight (Admissions & Discharge)
Provide final approval for all resident admissions and discharges in coordination with the Program Director
Facilities & Operations
Ensure proper maintenance and safety of all buildings and grounds
Conduct regular facility inspections (at least monthly)
Oversee kitchen and dining operations
Financial Oversight & Purchasing
Approve all budgeted expenditures
Obtain Board approval for non-budgeted purchases
Records & Documentation
Ensure accurate and compliant maintenance of all organizational records, including personnel, resident, financial, and regulatory documentation
Availability & Continuity of Leadership
Ensure continuous leadership coverage, either directly or through a qualified designee
Designate and prepare staff to assume leadership responsibilities during absences
Professional Development
Participate in ongoing training and professional development to enhance leadership effectiveness and program quality
Family Engagement
Support and maintain positive relationships with families and guardians of children in care
Leadership & Decision-Making
Exercise sound judgment by gathering relevant information and consulting stakeholders before making decisions
Address critical issues proactively and thoughtfully
